A Brief History Of Mumbai
..........It is little surprising that the name of the city has also undergone several changes. The Arabs called it 'Al Omanis' and the Portuguese called it 'Bom Bahia' meaning 'Good Bay', as the islands provided an excellent and deep harbour enabling great trade. The English however shortened the name to a much convenient ‘Bombay’. This name stuck to the city for a long time...........
