One of the first things Nelson Mandela did on being elected President was to retain, amid heavy opposition, a struggling symbol of his days of oppression – the Afrikaner Springbok Rugby team. To unite a country divided over years of harsh racial strife, he decided to reinvigorate its most common denominator of national pride. The move would extend an olive branch to the apprehensive white Afrikaner as well as bond them with the indigenous people under a common aspiration – the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Invictus attempts to tell that story....
